Ribbon Flowers & A Give-Away!

Spring is in the air!

take-my-hand

Or so do all of us north of the Mason-Dixie line hope! ;)

Good Sunday morning to all and especially a warm springy welcome to anyone new who stops by thanks to Scrapbook News & Review’s Spring Fling Blog-A-Log.  I have had so much fun following along so far and hope you have too.  I’m honored to be a part of the fun!  Keep reading for more as well as how to enter to win!

Today I’m sharing a quick tutorial on how to use those ribbon scraps to make cute as can be flowers for your layouts, cards, or whatever you can imagine.    Soon I hope you will be hoarding those little end pieces of ribbon to make all sorts of versions of these easy do-it-yourself embellishments.

Here’s all you need:

  • Ribbon scraps in cut into various sizes (slightly similar, but doesn’t need to be exact).
  • Embroidery floss
  • Needle
  • Adhesive Dots
  • Buttons

Make these in 3 easy steps:

First, cut your ribbon of choice into several smaller pieces.  Use your scraps and get creative with color combos!  For these, I chose to go with a uniform color for each flower:

Next, fold the two ends of each piece together to form a half-loop shape, then run the thread and needle through the two ends, and repeat… like so:

ribbon-flowers-2

Continue this with all your pre-cut pieces.  The more pieces you use, the more “full” your flower will be once complete.

Once done, sew through your last piece twice in order to create a secure end to hold the pieces together (or simply tie loose end in a knot) and fan out the sewn together loops to make a kind of blossom:

Continue to fan and arrange the loops until you have the shape you like.  The fact that they are sewn together will give you freedom to truly “mess” with them until they look right to you.

Once done, simply attach a button in the center with adhesive dots to complete.

Attach the finished flower to your layout with adhesive dots, and you are done!

Just imagine all the fun color combos you could come up with!

Now for the really fun part!  As part of the Spring Fling Celebration, I will be giving away one $20 gift certificate to a wonderful store and direct sales company called AC Bailey Designs.  To those who aren’t familar, AC Bailey is a wonderful community, and I have been honored to serve as a Design Team Member for the past year.  Please stop by to check us out!

All you must do to enter for a chance to win is to leave a comment on this post with the answer to the following question:

What to you says Spring?

Please only one entry per person and international visitors are more than welcome to play as well.  (The certificate will be sent via email ) The contest will remain open through Monday 3/16 at 8pm Central at which time I’ll do the handy dandy Random Generator to pick a winner!  Good luck!

Thanks so much for stopping by to visit today and do come back again soon.

Happy Spring! :)

  • The layout is beautiful Jess, and those flowers are so cute. I am going to try it, it looks so easy!

  • Spring to me means warmer temperatures, budding flowers, when I go out outside in the sun I feel rejuvenated like I’m waking up from hibernation!

Love the layout by the way. And I will definitely try your ribbon flower design.

  • Little league says spring! :)

My kids outside riding their bikes says “Spring” to me. Although, this year’s weather has been a bit of a tease for us in MA!

  • Lisa

The flowers blooming, weather warming; the sun coming out more and more, and Soccer season with my kids.

  • I know that spring has sprung when the huge tree outside my office becomes white with blooms, and the mountain in the distance turns from brown to green – yay!

  • Spring to me means tulips in abundance..my favorite flower.

Love the tutorial, cant wait to try it!

  • Great flowers, Jess!!

    Um, you know I don’t have spring like you, but I just saw {and bought} fresh strawberries yesterday… that’s when I know it’s spring around here – t he fresh fruits and veggies are available for a good price! {Can you say 2.49 for a quart? :D }

Pst. You don’t have to put me in for the drawing – just wanted to say hi!! :)

  • I’d like to say when I’m able to get outside and walk (like I did today), spring has finally arrived, but I’d have to say pastel Easter dresses under winter coats is more the norm for Michigan. Yup, even in April!

  • Jenn

Beautiful photo and layout. Who are the kids in the photo?

Love the ribbon project. Have a big bag of scrap ribbon that I can now use. To me, Spring means the Lenten season, Easter and daffodils.

  • Great idea for those ribbon scraps! The flowers are the first thing that caught my eye on your layout. :) As for what says Spring, to me it’s the beauty of my flower garden returning to vivid colors.

  • Shannon

definitely playing fetch with the pooch in the back yard!!!:)

Yesterday i caught a glimpse of two Redbud trees in bloom in my backyard. I planted them about 8 years ago and this is thier first blooms. I think that means spring for me. I’ve been cooped up all week due to constant rains and 40 degrees outside and i am really looking forward to spring. ms.cheryl

jess, love the Lo and I’m gonna try those flowers. Cardinals say spring tome. They are all over our property and so beautiful!!

  • Your LO is so cute. I love the flowers — great tutorial too.

Spring is….warmer temps and flowers blooming. I love seeing the beautiful flowers’ colors, and feeling the warmer air during the day. There’s also a spring smell to the air in the evenings. Love it!

  • Tulips mean Spring to me…seeing the little bursts of green starting to come up through the bark in my garden tell me that it is only a short while now… even though we had snow this morning again!!!
Thank you for the chance to win…I love AC Bailey!

  • I love the ribbon flowers!! Thanks for the “how-to”, I am sooo going to try these out!
Spring to me is sweatshirt weather. I love when we can go out in a big comfy sweatshirt and leave the winter coat and gloves behind.

  • Lee Diamond

Spring is when the beautiful flowers start to come out and the trees start blooming. The warm weather gets me in the mood to bring out my favorite wardrobe piece-flip flops!!!

I can’t wait to try this ribbon tecnique.

  • Yvette

I love your new blog look!! The flowers are adorable.
Spring is here when I see my tulips and daffodils poking up:)
    Thanks!!

  • Jen

Spring to me is baseball season!!!!
LOVE your blog and the ribbon flowers are awesome!

  • Nothing says spring to me more than seeing all of the baby animals. Flowers may be late in blooming because of cold weather, but the new born animals come regardless of it.

  • Donna

What a wonderful tutorial! Love the idea using ribbon scraps…

Thanks for the chance to win also! :) Spring to me means a fresh new beginning..

  • Rebirth, fresh, cleansing, purification, breath – full…….this is what SPRING is to me!

    Great tutorial!

  • Great layout and I love those ribbon flowers! Thanks for the inspiration! Buds on the trees and flowers peeking out of the ground make me feel that Spring has arrived! :)

  • Michelle

Spring is….. when the ice houses have to be off the frozen lake because of warmer weather!!! great idea for ribbon scraps! thanks Jess!!

  • bulb flowers like daffodils, tulips, crocus ;)

  • What an awesome use for those scraps (I knew I was saving them for something…grin). For me, spring is “break up” when all the snow and ice melts on the road and the cars are a nasty mud color (from the dirt put on the icy roads). I know that the true beauty of the season is not far behind that.

  • Mary

When it’s warm enough to keep the doors and windows open throughout the day, spring has arrived!

  • That’s a nifty way to use up the tag ends of ribbons!

Being from Oz, Springs means wattle and pollen in the air, and magpie season. Cold mornings that turn into warm afternoons, clear sky promising the coming of summer!

  • Leaving in
fl Spring comes early when My shed which is covered with Lady of the night site blooming, and my DH start sneezing his head off, due to allergies. That is always my alert Spring is here :)
    Maggie

  • Spring to me is the sent of crisp clean air laced with a hint of a floral aroma. It is the feeling of the soft cool grass between my toes. It is the sound of new life singing from the nests in the trees and it also is the flavor of a juicy, sweet luscious red strawberry on my lips. Spring is a time of new life and a season for romance for all creatures.

  • I know it’s spring when I start seeing tulips and daffodils start to peek their heads out.

  • Sherry Davis

Spring is being able to air everything out – opening the windows to let the fresh air flow through. Also, it’s our 5th season – we have: Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring AND Mud! But, it is definitely a welcomed season after the long winters.

Sorry… forgot to say great post – can’t wait to read your next one!

  • Spring – a chance to see the grass and not snow, walking the dog without seeing my breath, more daylight!

I live in Michigan and by now the winter weather is driving us all a little crazy! Thanks for this chance.

    Jean

  • Jenn

for me, spring is completely!! about being able to do yard work and have it stay that way…the snow is DONE and the flowers are starting to peek through….LOVE it!

  • Becky

Spring — getting ready for our church’s Easter musical, seeing which of my perennials “made it” through the winter, hearing children playing in the park across the street, and the wonderful clean air smell!

  • GBS

Hey Jess! These are ADORABLE!! I need to give this a try.

Spring to me, is when the trees and flowers are budding!! Oh…and of course. your car (and everything else) turns yellow with pollen!! OIY!!
It is definately spring here!! I am loving it!

    Susan

  • Melissa

Awesome! I definately want to do that.

Personally, spring is the fist sinus attack. Yes, I know. That is so…down…callus. Sorry. I love all of the flowers, planting the garden, Easter. And this year, my little girl discovering the joy and wonder of flowers!! YEA!

  • Love your flower tutorial! Thanks so much! As for Spring, I love it that everyone starts coming out of their apartments and hitting the pavement here in NYC!

  • ter

I love the idea of using thread/needle! I’ve always just glue-gunned each section which is messy and doesn’t always work! Thanks for your tip! I will be doing that next time for sure!

( I need to get a binder and print off stuff like this for future reference!)

  • Those are so cute, Jess. Somehow I missed them here. I love your page, too. I just might have to try those :)
