I was part of a lively conversation on Facebook yesterday. It began as someone posting a simple status update to remind all that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and to spread the word that an important part of every woman’s life is to become educated about how to detect breast cancer, because early treatment is a large key to survival.
Someone else chimed in that October also stands for many other causes and they didn’t understand why Breast Cancer was getting so much attention when there were other worthy diseases or issues that became lost in the shuffle. They rattled off a list of several things that they felt should be in the spotlight too. It was an odd list that came from some sort of Google search I’m sure, but the Devil’s Advocate had come to play and had a point to make.
But still, it got me thinking.
Mostly thinking that I wanted to post something too.
Because yes there are several causes out there that deserve our attention. There are horrible, awful situations that are only solved by the banding together of people with the common interest of bettering our world.
So why is Breast Cancer in the forefront of my dear friend’s thoughts yesterday and mine today?
1. Because you’re talking about messing with our mothers…
our grandmothers…
our best friends…
our daughters…
And when they are threatened, we will band together, and we will be heard.
2. Because when when we wear a pink ribbons we are not only showing support for survivors and fighters…. we wear the color of our Sisters. Delicate and feminine for the most part, but hot and fierce when necessary.
3. Because we should not ever again say “breast” while blushing, but rather with conviction that an important part of what makes us nurturers and mothers should not be something any woman should ever have the need to be afraid of.
4. Because we all will know someone who will get it. We will. And I’d rather they enter the fight armed, ready, and ahead of the game than too late to even play.
5. And finally, because we’ve been given a platform. We’ve been given a month to not only spread awareness and educate, but to celebrate and remember. This month is not just for those that have not yet experienced this monster, but it is for those that have fought. So many that have won, and yet so many that we have tragically lost. I celebrate them. I celebrate their lives and what they have done to get us this far.
I celebrate you.
There will be more celebration of pink here this month. As rightly there should be. I do support other causes, but this one’s personal.
Until there is a cure.
Until we no longer have to dedicate a month to it.
In October I am dedicated to pink.
Thanks for stopping by today dear friends, and have a wonderful weekend.
Welcome and come on in! I'm Jess. I love all things crafty, and to share an artistic journey with friends like you. Relax, take a look around, and come back again soon. Thanks for stopping by!
